Pikeville city police arrested a home improvement store employee for allegedly firing a gun inside the store.

It happened just before 7:00 a.m. at Lowes on Cassidy Boulevard.
police say 51-year-old Barry Cates threatened to hurt himself and a co-worker.

"Apparently he had been involved in an altercation with another employee that had spanned for about a month and that kept escalating and he had stated that he had all he could take and he was taking a gun and confronting another employee with the problem they were having with each other," said Det. Phillip Reed of the Pikeville City Police Dept.

Officials said the store was closed until around noon and nobody was injured. Cates was taken to the pike county jail and faces multiple felony charges.
