Environmental groups target Johnson Co. mine

LONDON, Ky. (AP) - The Sierra Club and Kentuckians for the
Commonwealth say they have filed a legal action against an eastern
Kentucky coal operator accusing the mining company of polluting
waters in Johnson County.

The groups named the Bear Hollow surface mine run by Laurel
Mountain Resources and said it is discharging selenium without a
permit. The groups say selenium is harmful to aquatic life and at
high levels can harm humans.

The environmental groups said in a statement Wednesday that they
have filed a 60-day notice to sue in federal court in London as
required under the Clean Water Act. The notice gives Laurel
Mountain a two-month window to address problems before a suit is
filed.

No one answered a call to Laurel Mountain offices in
Prestonsburg on Wednesday.
