Ex-Massey CEO resurfaces, forms Ky. coal company

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Don Blankenship virtually vanished from the public eye a year ago this week, but he's kept a toe in the
mining business and may be angling to raise his profile.

Public records show the former Massey Energy chief executive has
incorporated a new venture in Kentucky.

Paperwork for McCoy Coal Group Inc. has been on file since
January. But Kentucky Energy and Environment spokesman Dick Brown says it has yet to seek any mining permits.

Blankenship was forced to retire after the 2010 explosion that
killed 29 workers at a Massey mine in West Virginia. He declined to
accept a phone call Thursday.

The United Mine Workers of America calls his formation of a new
coal company "a travesty." The union says Blankenship belongs in
jail.
