Faculty and students mourn death of Pike County teen

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Staff and students at one Pike County high school are mourning the loss of a young life.

As the rain fell outside Shelby Valley High School Monday, tears fell inside.

"She'll really be missed here at Shelby Valley," said SVHS Guidance Counselor Diana Compton.

Kaitlyn Kiser, a junior, was killed in a car accident Friday night.

"Just a very difficult situation, and it's something we'll all get through together," said SVHS Principal Greg Napier.

Staff and students are now trying figure out how to deal with the loss of a girl they say could brighten any room.

"She was a beautiful girl, had a winning smile, just a wonderful, wonderful girl," said Compton.

Talking with grief counselors and writing farewell messages for their classmate seems to help.

"They're resilient, and they are handling this as best they can, keeping a positive face and keeping the positive memory of Kaitlyn Kiser alive," said Napier.

Faculty members say since pink and green were her favorite colors, they will be releasing pink and green balloons after the service. Students and staff also wore pink and green to school Monday.

"A lot of them are thinking of ways of things that they can do to help express their sorrow, and that helps. Everyone's different in what they do," said Compton.

But they all agree on one thing: Kaitlyn Kiser will never be forgotten.

"She's a Shelby Valley Wildcat, and as such it's going to be difficult to overcome the loss," said Napier.

It will be hard, they say, but they will stick together.

The funeral will be at 1:00 Tuesday at the high school.
