Faith community asked to help homeless shelter

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - One local homeless shelter is still struggling to raise the money it needs to operate, and now officers with the Hazard Police Department are asking local churches to pitch in.

The Corner Haven Homeless Shelter in Hazard continues to face a budget shortfall that has reduced it to overnight operation only.

This comes as concerning news for many.

"With the harsh temperatures coming up, it gets really cold here. Single-digit temperatures are just around the corner. No one wants to be outside to endure that all day," said Joseph Engle of the Hazard Police.

Local officials have been meeting recently to brainstorm solutions for the shelter's budget woes, but with no quick fixes in sight, police are asking area churches for help.

"Jesus of course said in the bible 'Whatever you've done to the least of these, you've done unto me' so these people are down on their luck and they need someone to step up," said Engle.

Police say they're confident the faith community will step up to help the homeless.

"Mountain folk have a way of stepping up, in times of need especially, helping their own," said Engle.

The shelter needs to raise $50,000 to operate through the winter but shelter officials remain hopeful that the funds will come through.

The alternative, they note, is bleak.

"To have people out on the streets when it's cold and rainy, it's inhuman and we as a community can do much much better," said shelter director Adrienne Bush.

Officials say with the number of churches in the area, the money should be raised in no time.

Donations to the Corner Haven Homeless Shelter can be made at People's Bank in Hazard.
