ALTRO, Ky (WYMT) - Saying goodbye is never easy, but that is exactly what friends and family of Tommy Lee Smith did Wednesday at a church in Breathitt County.
Smith was murdered on September 17th and a family friend says she still cannot believe this happened.
Smith was found dead in his trailer with a gunshot wound to the head.
Edith Johnson said she has known Smith for years and that even a few days after his murder, it is still hard to believe he is gone.
"We just miss him so much you know. It is just so hard. I cannot believe this happened to him," said Johnson.
Friends and family honored his memory with a funeral at Altro Church of God.
Johnson said Smith was someone worth knowing.
"He would take the shirt off his back and give it to you, you know, if he had a dollar in his pocket and he thought you needed it, it was yours," said Johnson.
Johnson added that losing Smith is like losing one of her own.
"He is just like a son, one of my sons, you know? I feel like he was one of mine," said Johnson.
She said she just wants justice for her loved one.
"We just hope whoever did it gets caught or they find whoever did it. It is just so sad," said Johnson.
Others at the funeral spoke about what a great man Smith was.
Family members told us they were too emotional to go on camera at the funeral.
Kentucky State Police are still investigating Smith's murder and said they are following up on possible leads.
