Family and friends say goodbye to soldiers bound for Afghanistan

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Soldiers with the 125th Transportation Company said they were excited to start this mission to Afghanistan. Their families said they were proud of their soldiers, but a little apprehensive about the months ahead.

More than 150 soldiers filed into a hall at the Bluegrass Army Depot as their families packed the room all the way to the doors.

"It makes you feel good because you know that there are people that support what you do. It gives you pride and reminds you why we put on this uniform every day," said Private First Class Allen Shirley.

The soldiers will be based at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan, transporting fuel to remote locations and providing security in the region.

"We've really come together, not only as a platoon, but a company getting ready," said PFC Shirley.

While the soldiers said they were anxious to get started, their loved ones had mixed feelings.

"We're very proud of Austin, obviously, and apprehensive. A little nervous, but I'm very comfortable with the US Army, especially after today. I feel like they're in charge," said Patricia Thurman, mother of Specialist Austin Darnell.

"It's really good to see him go because I know he's going to come back safe and it's a good learning experience to go on out and see the whole world," said SPC Darnell's girlfriend, Elizabeth Roman.

After those soldiers leave Kentucky, they'll head to Fort Hood, Texas for their final phase of training, then on to Afghanistan.
