HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - It was a shooting that shocked the community.
Now, we are hearing from the victims family for the first time.
Earlier this week, Jackie Cornett received news that no father ever wants to hear.
His son, Jackie Doug Cornett, his granddaughter, 12 year old Taylor Cornett and his adopted daughter, 20 year old Kaitlyn Cornett, were shot and killed in the Hazard Community and Technical College parking lot Tuesday night.
Police say Dalton Stidham, also known as Dalton Miller, is charged with the crime.
"I'm hurt and I feel sorry for the boy that done this and I pray for everybody." Cornett said.
Now, a memorial honoring the lives of the three victims stands in the same parking lot.
Some of the victims family members came to the college on Thursday night. They say seeing the memorial shows them how much the community really cares.
Cornett says time and forgiveness are the only things that can help him heal.
"I gotta pray for the boy that done this. I loved that boy and I have to forgive that boy." Cornett said.
Cornett says he wants to focus less on the death of his loved ones and focus more on the legacies they left behind.
