Family, friends closest to Gatewood celebrate his life

A lot of people filed in to the Campbell House Tuesday night, everyone inside saying goodbye to one of Kentucky's best known politicians.

Gatewood Galbraith died last week from complications of pneumonia. He was surrounded by immediate family at his home in Lexington. They were at the Campbell House Tuesday, with many of Gatewood's closest friends, honoring and remembering the colorful politician. Galbraith ran for governor five times. He never held the office, but people we spoke with say he certainly should have. They say our state's lost one of its finest politicians.

"He probably did more for the state of Kentucky without being elected than a lot of people ever thought about doing," said Galbraith supporter Garry Murphy.

The public celebration of Gatewood's life will be held Thursday between 4 and 8 p.m. at the Carnegie Center on West Second Street in Lexington.
