A boil water advisory is in effect for all of Martin County after power outages from recent storms caused much of the county to be without water.

Three rounds of storms in the past week have caused extensive power outages across the region and left several in Martin County without water for days.

"We have approximately 12 pump stations, not including the plant here, and all of them were out," said Joe Hammond, Martin County Water District representative.

But when Alice and Jackie Scott took their three kids to the lake during the outages, they never expected what would happen next.

"In 10 minutes they had a call on my house. I guess it probably just surged my house and burnt my house," said Alice Scott.

Their home in Lovely was on fire, but when firefighters responded they ran into an unusual problem.

"There was no water to even hook up to the fire hydrant so trucks had no water," she said.

They say firefighters had to travel about a mile down the road to get water from a pond to fight the fire.

"If we'd have had water they might have been able to do more because the hydrant's right down the hill," Scott said.

But she says she is just thankful they were not home when it burned.

"We was in the bed the night before without electric and it's a thousand wonders we didn't burn in the house. We couldn't have got out, and there ain't nothing could ever explain how you feel when you lose your home," she said.

Officials say around 200 people are still without water, but they hope to have it running again by Monday.

The county-wide boil water advisory is in effect until further notice. Officials say you should bring your water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using it.
