PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - She was just 12 years old, and her life was cut short.
Shelby Damron died Sunday when the ATV she was on crashed into a tree. Now her friends and teachers at Johns Creek Elementary School in Pike County are trying to deal with the loss.
Students and teachers were dressed in blue, Shelby's favorite color, many still in shock.
"It was tough. It was tough for the teachers. It was tough for me, tough for them," said Guidance Counselor Angela McClain.
She was in 7th grade, but her life ended suddenly Sunday.
"It's not anything you're ever prepared for," said McClain.
Administrators at Johns Creek Elementary School brought in a team of counselors to help not only the students but also the teachers get through the grieving process.
"Our county has suffered a great loss because Shelby was just an outstanding person and an outstanding student," said Johns Creek Elementary School Principal Kenneth Adkins.
Notes from friends line a bulletin board inside the school expressing sorrow for the friend they called "Bean." Pictures hang to remind them of her infectious smile.
"She had such a great attitude and really was just always such a positive influence on the other kids. Everybody loved her," said Adkins.
Teams of counselors worked tirelessly to help the close knit group try to understand.
"They feel invincible and this shows them that we are human, and it is scary for them," said Adkins.
But by sticking together they know they can help her memory live on.
"It's been a rough day, but I think we've made it through pretty good," said McClain.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Lucas and Son Funeral Home.
Her funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at Johns Creek Elementary School.
