LETCHER COUNTY, Ky (WYMT) - The Letcher County Coroner's Office has confirmed one person has died after a fire near the Mayking community of Letcher County.

"On appearance and what we know right now is smoke inhalation," said Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker. "She was actually in a back bedroom, and the fire did not consume that bedroom."

Baker told WYMT that Bettie Joe Fields, 66 died this morning after a single-wide trailer she was in caught fire.

Kentucky State Police have dispatched an arson investigator to the scene of the fire, which Mayking Fire Chief Tony Fugate said was typical when a fire involves a death.

Neighbors remembered Fields as a good person. One woman at nearby Sergent Methodist Church remembered here as someone who "had a lot of people who cared" about her.

Neighbor Susan Bartley also shared fond memories.

"We rode motorcycles a few times together, and she liked to sew," she said. "She was a good person."
