WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT)- 11:00 PM Update:
There are new details about a deadly crash in Whitley County involving a Kentucky State Trooper.
The crash happened late this afternoon on US-25W, north of Williamsburg. Police say the trooper was responding to a crash when his cruiser collided with a Camaro. The driver of the Camaro died.
41-year-old James King of Williamsburg died in the accident. State Troopers say one of their own was trying to pass him when the crash happened. Trooper Lloyd Cochran told us about the wreck saying, “The trooper had his emergency equipment activated. As he's traveling northbound he approaches slow or stopped traffic. As he's traveling northbound he gets over into the southbound lane to pass the slower traffic.”
Trooper Lloyd Cochran says Wednesday night's fatal wreck was a rear angle collision. Both cars were traveling north, and the Camaro James King was driving tried turning left at the same time the trooper tried passing it. Cochran said, “And the camaro pulled into the trooper's lane at which time the collision occurred.”
The Whitley County coroner tells us King died at the scene. The state trooper, we're told, is suffering from non life-threatening injuries.
Trooper Cochran went on to tell us, “Anytime you have officer-involved collisions, anytime an officer gets injured in any way, it always bothers you.”
At this time Kentucky State Police will not release the name of the trooper involved in the wreck. They say he is a veteran of the force, and has been a trooper more than five years.
The Williamsburg Police Department has confirmed a deadly wreck involving a state trooper.
Police say a trooper was responding to a crash at the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 25 near Williamsburg, and hit a vehicle head on, killing another person.
The crash involving the trooper happened on US-25W at the Bray's Chapel Road intersection in Canadatown around 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday.
We're told the trooper was trying to get around slow traffic, and pulled into the southbound lane when a Camaro pulled out in front of him. The two collided and the driver of the Camaro was killed.
The coroner says the trooper was taken to a local hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.
U.S. 25, west of Angel Road is still closed for investigation.
The Whitley County Sheriff's Department and Kentucky State Police are still on the scene.
