Fate of Pennington house still unknown

Construction already started next door to the Pennington house. Community members came together to discuss what they can do to make sure the historical building does not become part of that construction project.

These community members want to keep the pennington house around.

"We'd just hate to see it go. It has such a rich background. History," said Anglee Smith, President of the Laurel County Historical Society.

Some came up with possible solutions.

"I feel something can be worked out where the county can buy this house outright and let it evolve from there and it would be a win win for everybody. The community, the property owner, the county, the house," said Jim Hays, who lived in London his entire life.

But time is still an issue.

"If we start tomorrow as I'd like to, it's going to take some time to see what solutions other than just letting them go ahead with the demolition, which is already prepared for and funded in their arrangement anyway," said Donna Horn-Taylor, a Laurel County citizen with a historic preservation background.

Horn-Taylor sent a request to the project development board handling the issue asking for a time extension.

"It was my understanding when they met a few days ago that when they met they would also look at closing on the sales of the property. So we're not asking them not to buy the property, we're asking that one piece to not require the demolition that was originally set up in the contract," she explained.

Only time will tell if that extension will be honored. The board is expected to meet on Monday, but we are not sure if they will be discussing the extension or not.
