The federal government is now investigating claims that a popular so-called energy shot could cause fatal reactions.

During the past four years, the FDA has received claims that the 5 Hour Energy shot may have caused 33 hospitalizations and 13 deaths.

Local health officials say they have seen patients coming in complaining of chest pains after consuming energy drinks or shots.

Now they are trying to spread the word about just how dangerous these drinks can be.
Redbull, Monster, 5 Hour Energy---each of these popular energy drinks pack a powerful caffeine punch.

“A lot of people don't realize how much caffeine is actually in an energy drink. They'll drink several of those a day plus they'll drink their normal Mountain Dew or Pepsi that already has a lot of caffeine and all of that caffeine together can really cause a lot of problems,” said Fraan Hughes, a Hazard Physician.

The 5 Hour Energy shot is now under investigation by the FDA for allegedly being linked to 13 deaths and many more severe reactions.

The 5 Hour Energy shot is only about 2 ounces but it contains nearly twice as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.

Doctors say drinking it could be dangerous for adults but even more dangerous for kids.

Health experts say young kids and teenagers don't realize how dangerous the energy drinks are to their health.

Doctors encourage parents to limit how much caffeine their kids consume on a daily basis because the side effects could be serious or even fatal.

Officials with the FDA say if 5 Hour Energy shots did cause injuries, it would be taken off the market only if the injuries resulted from proper use of the product as stated on its label.
