Fire at a recycling plant shuts down highway

STEARNS, Ky. (WYMT) - The McCreary County Sheriff's Department confirms a fire at Kings Tire Recycling in McCreary County is large.

The McCreary Record reports some nearby factories and a daycare have been evacuated and people who live nearby are being told to stay indoors.

Public Protection Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown says the Energy and Environment Cabinet's emergency response team is responding to the fire in McCreary County. The agency has asked for air quality monitoring by federal environmental experts because of the facility's proximity to residential areas.

Brown says the fire is at Kings Tire Recycling in Stearns and says there may be as many as 100,000 tires.
