WEEKSBURY, Ky. (WYMT) - It has been a staple in the small town of Weeksbury in Floyd County for nearly three decades, but today it is closed. The Quik Stop convenience store was gutted by an early morning fire.
Just by looking at the outside, you wouldn't know that Compton's Quick Stop in Weeksbury was gutted by an early Tuesday morning fire. The blaze began shortly before 3:00. Firefighters from Southeast, Wheelwright, and Left Beaver Fire Departments battled the blaze for about two hours.
"It took out one wall that I know of," said Greg Compton, the store's owner. "The coolers of course, the wiring, and it burnt through ... there's an apartment upstairs and it burnt a couple places up to the upstairs also."
The building also suffered extensive water and smoke damage. The store has operated in the small Floyd County community for 28 years.
"It's a handy store, has tremendous business, and any time something is gone in a community this small it is sadly missed," said Paula Johnson, who lives near the store and saw the fire.
People we talked to say they hope the owners will be able to rebuild.
"They're like family, and I go to church with Greg and his family, so I do hope that he rebuilds and comes back," Johnson said.
Authorities are not sure what caused the blaze. An arson investigation is expected to be conducted within the next few days. The store's owner says the building was insured and he hopes to reopen as soon as possible.
