PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - A fire Monday afternoon destroyed an office building in downtown Pikeville and sent two firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries.

It all started around 4:30 when the 911 center got reports of a fire in downtown Pikeville.

"When we got here flames were exposed, heavy smoke in the area. Basically it was fully involved. We just started attacking it immediately," said Public Safety Director Paul Maynard.

Officials say the Riverside Office Complex on Hambley Boulevard was empty and about to be torn down.

"Once it was deemed that there was no occupants fire suppression was started," said fireman Robert Lindsey.

Two Pikeville firefighters were sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. They are not releasing the names of those firefighters at this time.

The flames tore through the building quickly.

"Quite a bit of damage to the interior and the structure of the building," said Lindsey.

And officials say they were fortunate it did not spread to any other places.

"Luckily the location of the structure was a benefit for us. It kept it from spreading from building to building," said Maynard.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one was in the building when the fire started, and no other injuries have been reported.
