VERDA, Ky. (WYMT) - They acted on instincts, possibly saving one man's life. It is the story of a group of Harlan County firefighters who pulled a man from the flames of a burning home.

The man has severe burns.

The fire on Mine Road in the Verda community started around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Firefighters say flames were as high as the power lines when they arrived at the home. The Fire Chief says he found a man trying to escape.

"I came around and stepped down, found the victim laying right out from the building here. Picked him up, packed him right here to the edge of the road," says Petie Osborne, Lower Clover Fork Fire Chief.

He says another firefighter carried the man down the road. Osborne says they tried to make him comfortable until an ambulance arrived.

The victim's name is not released, but officials say he went to UK Hospital with severe injuries.

"He had pretty bad burns on him," said Osborne.

"I'm just glad to know he's alright for now," said Daniel Raymond Cox, neighbor to the fire victim.

Neighbors say flames quickly spread to the SUV parked on the road. Firefighters were able to stop it from spreading to other homes.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause, but say it appears to be accidental. Osborne says the victim told him a heater sparked the blaze.

Nothing is left of the one room building, but firefighters say they are just glad the man inside is alive.

"I hope I done something good for him, because if I hadn't gotten to him when I did, it'd been too late," said Osborne.

Friends say he is expected to survive.

"I've been praying all morning," said Cox.

Firefighters say KU responded to help with the power lines around the fire.
