First responders discuss holiday safety

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - It's that time of year, filled with Christmas trees, lights, and holiday shopping.

Despite the festivities, first responders we talked to say risks during the holiday season are pretty much the same as they are year round.

"The only thing that's different this time of year is maybe a little bit with the traffic," said Lonnie Adams, with the Hazard Fire Department. "Around the shopping centers and stuff, you know there will be a few extra wrecks around there."

Adams says you should slow down when behind the wheel, and make sure Christmas cheer does not turn into road rage.

The National Safety Council also has some tips for the holidays.

They say you should only use lights that are UL listed, and do not use more than three light sets on any one extension cord.

"Don't overload your circuits, your outlets. Use the proper lights for indoor and outdoor," Adams said.

By slowing down and using good old common sense, Adams says you can enjoy the best the season has to offer without placing a call to 911.
