First Annual Fallen Miners Memorial Ride in Harlan

Updated: Sun 7:51 PM, Jul 31, 2011

More than 100 bikers revved up for the First Annual Fallen Miners Memorial Ride in Harlan.

The event is hosted by the Harlan County Miners Brotherhood Motorcycle Club consisting of nearly 50 miners in Eastern Kentucky.

"I'm a coal miner, my dad was a coal miner, and his dad was a coal miner. We're all miners," said Jody Napier, Vice President of the Harlan County Miners Brotherhood Motorcycle Club.

The event is offering financial assistance to families of fallen coal miners underground and off the clock across the state.

"We're proud to give it. That's what it's about. People helping people," said Trampus King, a member of the Short Arm Gang Motorcycle Club in Harlan.

All of the bikers wore these shirts to support families of fallen coal miners.

Most of the bikers who participated are also miners.

"I've lost a lot of friends in the coal mines. I actually lost a brother, Bud Morris, a few years back. He meant a lot to me," said King.

The miners on bikes say they hope the event gives miners the support they need and deserve.

"Coal miners don't have a voice. Everybody it seems like in the world is against miners and what they do. And that's how we feed our family. That's how we survive. And it's a dangerous job, and a lot of people lose their lives doing that job," said Napier.

Every penny earned at the event goes to the families.

The bikers rode nearly 70 miles to Martins Fork Lake from Harlan.
