SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - A Magoffin County child is dead after an ATV accident.

It happened Sunday afternoon on Sugar Camp Road in Salyersville.

"Going to the scene radio traffic came over that there was CPR in progress, so we tried to step it up because we knew we had a situation," said Magoffin County Rescue Squad Captain Carter Conley.

Officials say an ATV carrying five people crashed into an embankment.

One of those people was four-year-old Patrick Cleere. He was thrown from the ATV and died at the scene.

Officials say the vehicle the five were on was a larger utility terrain vehicle, and they say you should always remember simple safety rules while operating any of these vehicles.

"People need to realize that they're fine for recreation. They are not a play toy," said Conley.

No charges have been filed, but the accident is still under investigation.

Kentucky laws state anyone on an ATV under the age of 16 must wear a helmet which officials say was not the case for anyone on this vehicle.

"I've been here forty years, and it doesn't get any easier from the first day to now to deal with especially this type of fatality," said Conley.

Family members of the child who died did not want to speak.

Officials say of the five on board the ATV four were juveniles.

Two of the people on board had non life-threatening injuries. Two were not hurt.
