A five-car chain-reaction collision injured several people.
When Somerset police officers arrived at the scene, they learned the collision started when Ray Collett, age 55, of Asher, Ky. (Leslie County), was southbound on US 27 in a 1993 Lincoln Town Car when he failed to see traffic stopped in front of him.
Collett struck a 2010 Nissan Altima driven by Loretta Napier, age 59,... of Manchester. This collision caused Napier's Nissan to strike a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Jessica Kelsey, age 34, of Dunnville, Ky. (Casey County). Kelsey's Ford Explorer then struck a 1998 Ford Expedition driven by Catherine Phelps, age 22, of Science Hill. The last sequence in the chain was when Kelsey's Expedition struck a 1992 Toyota Camry driven by Vicky McGowan, age 57, of Science Hill.
There were a total of six people transported to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital by the Somerset-Pulaski County EMS for non life-threatening injuries. They included:
-Collett and his passenger, Freddie Collett, age 53, of Nancy, Ky.,
-Napier and her passenger, Brian Napier, age 40, of Garrard, Ky. (Clay County)
-Kelsey and her passenger, Carol Owens, age 63, of Harrodsburg, Ky.
The three southbound lanes of US 27 were reduced to one lane for about 45 minutes while the investigation was completed and the scene was cleared.
The Somerset Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Somerset-Pulaski County EMS and the Kentucky Transportation Department's Safe Patrol.
