Flag retirement ceremony held

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Folks gathered just off of U.S. 23 near the Johnson and Floyd County line on Sunday for a flag retirement ceremony.

The Marine Corps League organized the ceremony with help from various law enforcement agencies and veteran organizations.

The Allen Central JROTC helped demonstrate the proper way to dispose of an American Flag by separating the red and white stripes from the blue and white stars.

The flags were then honored with a 21-gun salute and playing of taps.

Calvin Howell, with the Marine Corps League says, "We consider it as a living thing, just like a body...so it should be disposed of in a proper manner and there is a code on how it should be laid to rest."
