Florida fugitive found in Laurel County

It is the kind of place people love to call home.

“It is just a quiet place to live. We don’t ever have any crime like that close to us here,” says Doug Baxter, who says he’s lived in the rural Keavy community of Laurel County for more than 40 years, and is surprised by news that high profile suspect was arrested near his home.

Yet police say 44-year-old Gregory Daugherty was a wanted man..wanted for stealing a bunch of cars in Florida. There’s also questions about his involvement in a possible murder..and arson in Pinellas County.

"I just didn’t know what had happened. It surprised me with the suspect you have here,” said Baxter.

Neighbors tell us that Daugherty had been living in the trailer on Level Green Rd. for about a week, but there was suspicion about him in recent days. They say they noticed a lot of police patrolling the area and even watching the home in recent days.

Police say Daugherty was first found in Kentucky two weeks ago when he got away from a traffic stop and led state police on a chase. He was arrested about 5:30 Monday night, and awaits extradition in the Laurel jail..

“That feels pretty good, knowing that he’s already been took care of,” said Baxter.

Police in Pinellas County, Fla. tell us that they’ll have more information about Daughtery’s possible connection to the murder and arson later this week.
