HI HAT, Ky. (WYMT) - UPDATE 3/18/14
What first was thought to be a joke .... left workers scrambling for answers.
A robbery on Monday, put a small Floyd County community on alert.
Store officials at the Price Rite Market in Hi Hat say a man walked in, pointed his gun at a clerk... and it was all caught on tape.
The Price Rite Market in hi hat has been a part of the community for decades.
Store owner, Karen Hall says, "This has been in my family since the 70s, my uncle owned it, my parents owned it....this is the first time we've been robbed."
Owners say around six o'clock Monday evening a man wearing a mask entered their store.
Hall says, "When he came in the clerk was like you need to take that (the mask) off, and then he pointed a gun at her and demanded the cash."
The man got away with the cash, leaving a community on edge.
Folks who shop here at the market say it has always been a safe place and they are mad this happened in their community.
One customer says, "It is horrible. Everyone is looking over their shoulders, everyone is scared. I actually locked my doors for the first time in 35 plus years last night."
"This is the community's store. This is where they can come in, hand me their baby..do their grocery shopping, let their toddlers run up and down the aisle and we'll make sure they won't go out the door. It is just a community store," explains Hall.
Store owners say thankfully no one was hurt, just shaken up and now just like their customers, they say they are angry.
Hall says, "For someone to come in take what we work hard for and where my customers spend their hard earned money...for them to just come in and take it, that is just devastating." She adds, "Everybody is mad, everybody is angry, we've talked and it is like they have done all the stores...what is next our homes? Are they going to start invading our homes? What's next?"
Now, hoping this man is caught so they can get back to being the the safe community store.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Kentucky State Police at 606-433-7711.
