Former Benham mayor Betty Howard dies following long illness

Mountain News has confirmed former Benham mayor Betty Howard has died following a long illness.

Howard served more than 10 years as mayor of the Harlan County city and served as city clerk before that.

She was also heavily involved with the Benham Garden Club for a number of years.

Howard died early Monday morning at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Visitation for Howard will be from 6-8pm Wednesday at Tri-City Funeral Home in Benham.

Her funeral will be at 11am Thursday, also at the funeral home.

Betty Howard was 73 years old.
