HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Former Hazard mayor Bill Morton celebrated his 90th birthday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hazard.
It's a celebration that has been nearly one century in the making.
“Not many people get to 90 so I thought it was important and for it to be in his hometown because he's been here most of his life,” said Morton’s wife, Betty Morton.
Friends and family of former Hazard mayor Bill Morton gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday.
“This is wonderful because this is my hometown my friends my acquaintances, my associates,” said Bill.
Morton was born in 1923. Pictures and mementos of his past 90 years were on display at the party, and among those was his time spent as mayor during the 1970s.
Mrs. Morton says they made the timeline to create conversations between Bill and his friends, but she admits the best part about it was making it because they were able to reminisce about his life.
“I would write them down and he would talk about them, and we didn't get through so on the trip back we finished so it was just a fun time to remember,” said Betty.
Yet, you can't look at Morton's life without noticing the woman beside him.
“That's the best days work I ever did in my life, when I talked her into marrying me,” Bill said when talking about his wife.
He says he wouldn't have made it to 90 without Betty’s help.
“I married a good woman, and she knows how to cook and prepare the correct food,” said Bill.
He says he hopes that more good food and many more prayers will let him see year 100.
