A former Breathitt County teacher is now behind bars after pleading guilty to several sexual abuse charges.

Charles Andrew Mitchell was sentenced to seven and a half years in jail for having sexual contact with a student at the school where he taught.

Mitchell was an 8th grade social studies teacher at Sebastian Middle School when all this happened but resigned last May.

Mitchell pleaded guilty to 15 counts related to sexual misconduct with a student at the middle school.

Today, the courtroom was pretty tense as the judge and attorneys discussed Mitchell's future as a convicted sex offender.

Mitchell was immediately taken into custody even though his defense attorney says the man is not a criminal.

"What he did was admittedly a crime, he's pled guilty, acknowledged it, and acknowledged his need for sexual treatment. But at the end of the day, everything he did was fully consensual, but for the age issues," said Ned Pillersdorf, the defense attorney.

Mitchell admitted to taking photographs of his penis and sending them to one of his students and also having sexual intercourse with a minor.

Mitchell is in the Three Forks Regional Jail in Lee County.
