WHITESBURG, Ky (WYMT) - A Letcher County mother and her three children are behind bars tonight accused of abusing a family member.

An indictment was returned charging the four with complicity to abuse of an adult and complicity to neglect of an adult.

Teresa Maggard, Serenna Maggard, Sherman Maggard, and Matthew Maggard all say they are not guilty.

"They are accusing our family of neglecting our grandmother which is completely false," said Sherman Maggard.

The indictment says Teresa Maggard and her three children Serenna, Sherman and Matthew abused their grandmother Mildred Hughes who died last month.

"Me and my children have took care of my mom for four years without any help from her family or anything, and it's just shocking," said Teresa Maggard.

The indictment says they inflicted unreasonable confinement on their grandmother resulting in physical pain and injury.

It also says the four deprived Hughes of the services necessary to maintain her health and welfare.

"I'm the only child. She was a good mother. She was a good grandmother, a good christian woman," said Teresa Maggard.

All four defendants are charged with one count of neglect and one count of abuse, both are class C felonies.

The four are expected to be arraigned January 9th.
