PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - In the aftermath of a fire that killed five members of one family in Pike County, state and county officials are focusing their attention on preventing it from happening again.

Officials from the State Fire Marshal's office and Pike County fire departments met Tuesday to distribute hundreds of smoke detectors to people without them.

Pike County fire officials say they will not soon forget the images from the fire earlier this month in Jonancy that claimed the lives of four small children and their father.

"We are affected by it. We either got babies by the same age or grandbabies, and when you see that it just tears you apart," said Randy Courtney, President of the Pike County Firefighters Association.

But they say instead of dwelling on the loss they are going to help prevent it from ever happening to anyone else.

"Anything that we can do to reduce occurrences of this nature in the future we are definitely willing to do," said State Fire Marshal William Swope.

The State Fire Marshal gave Pike County fire departments more than 250 smoke detectors to hand out for free. They say if it helps save one life it was worth it.

"We wanted to come here and let the residents of this part of the state know that we are thinking about them," said Swope.

Pike County fire officials say it is a small gift that can make a huge difference.

"A little five, six, ten dollar item that they kind of forget about, but it's a most needed item," said Courtney.

They hope giving these smoke alarms to people without them can help ensure no one else loses their homes, families, or lives.

If you need smoke detectors you can contact your local fire department. Firefighters will install the alarms for you.
