78-year-old Clyde White didn't utter a word in a Rockcastle County courtroom Wednesday as his charges were upgraded to murder.
Police say he was behind the wheel of a van, and rammed it into the van his brother, 82-year-old Lawrence White was driving Monday. Police say Clyde White caused his brother to run off the road and smash into another van that was parked on the side of the road.
Their sister, 83-year-old Dorothy Whitaker, was airlifted from the scene. She died at UK Hospital Tuesday.
"Very sad. This is a family. These were family members and there are still some issues under investigation that I can't talk about," explained Trooper Ryan Loudermilk, a Kentucky State Police Trooper, investigating the case.
State police are still trying to determine the motive behind White's road rage. For the short term, a judge gave him a court appointed attorney. Court officials are trying to determine if the 78-year-old is indigent.
While they investigate, the pastor at the First Christian Church in Richmond is preparing for Dorothy "Dot" Whitaker's funeral.
"She's the type of person who had a big heart," explained Dr. Betsy Goehrig. "She was always giving to others, always giving. She's small in stature... huge in spirit."
Goehrig, Senior Pastor at First Christian Church, is speaking on behalf of the family at this time. She says Whitaker and her husband are in the pews every Sunday.
She says Dot was a pillar in the community as a volunteer and teacher and beloved by all.
"She'd do anything for you; she spent her life cooking for her family, her friends she prepared food for," Goehrig said. "She'd sew, be there to help in whatever way she could,"
In Turn, Dr. Goehrig says she'll be there with the family as they try to get through this difficult time.
Whitaker leaves behind her husband, daughter and granddaughter.
The visitation will be at First Christian Church on Thursday, with the funeral following Friday. Dr. Goehrig says family members would like donations to be made to the First Christian Church Building fund.
Lawrence White was released from the hospital Monday night.
