Community helping Estill Co. teen pay for parents' funeral

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - A Central Kentucky community is rallying around a teenager who's had to deal with losing both parents in just two weeks.

Joe Snowden, an 18 year old, Estill County High School senior, lost his father to cancer recently.

Thursday night, his mother died in a car crash. Now, friends are raising money to help him out.

The marks on Furnace Junction Road haven't faded much since they were put on the asphalt Thursday evening. 39-year-old Marinda Lewis was killed in the crash.

"(It's) something horrific, it's been absolutely horrible and I can't imagine (how it is) for him," says Debbie Powell, a friend of Snowden.

Friends say Lewis' son Snowden, works at a local hardware store and was helping her pay the bills.

"He's a hard worker," Powell says. "He's always had to work and help pay for stuff, and he's took care of his mom."

"(His) dad passed away about two and a half weeks ago from cancer and now his mom has been killed in a car wreck. He doesn't hardly have anybody," Powell says.

Not only did the crash in this curve kill Joe Snowden's mother, it also left the high school senior responsible for a second funeral in just a matter of weeks.

But the loss didn't keep Snowden from his other responsibilities.

"He (Powell's son) come home and he said, 'Joe went to school today,' and I said 'You're kidding,'" Powell said. "And he said 'No, he was at school, everybody was running up hugging him and giving him condolences.'"

Snowden's teachers and friends began collecting money, and raised enough to pay for his senior trip before the day was over. But they're still collecting, because he still has a two funerals to pay for.

"It's his senior year, it should be a joyous time but it's gonna be real hard on him here," Powell says

Talking about his friends Snowden tells us that he was thankful for the support.

"He shouldn't have to do this all on his own," Powell says.

To donate, you can send checks to Toler's Funeral Home, care of Joe Snowden.
It's located at 99 Cedar Grove, Irvine, KY 40336
