Funeral held for two-year-old sisters killed in a Knox County fire

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Funerals were held Thursday for three of the seven victims killed in a weekend house fire in southern Kentucky.

Two of the victims remembered Thursday were sisters, Paiten and Briel Cox, both two-years-old. And before the funeral at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home in Corbin, WKYT spoke with the Cox family for the first time.

They were spending the night with friends when the Knox County home caught fire Saturday morning.

"They were great with everyone. They were always happy," said Garfield Cox, Paiten and Briel's father.

They were only 11 months apart in age. Paiten Cox would have been three years old this month, and Briel Cox turned two just last month.

"Paiten was the spunky one. And Briel was just a little angel," said Cox.

Their father expressed to us that his little girls were his saving grace. He says Paiten and Briel were more like best friends than sisters.

And even at a young age, the girls were loved and known by many.

Thankful for the community's support, the father says his family does not have any funeral or burial costs, except, of course, the price of losing two young children.

"There's no way to describe it, but we have other children we have to live for," said Cox.

The two little girls will be buried side-by-side Friday at the Bradford Cemetery in Gray.

Services for 22-year-old Nina Asher and her three children, three-year-old William Gray Jr., two-year-old Camden Gray and eight-month-old Abigail Gray, are at two p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church in Woollum. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from one p.m. to 10 p.m. at the church.

And services for Asher's fiancé, Jesse Disney, were also Thursday in Corbin at Hart Funeral Home.

Thursday night in the Gray community several people will be lighting candles and having a moment of silence in remembrance of all seven fire victims.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
