HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) It may be summer vacation, but some Perry County 8th graders are diving into math and science.

Instructors from New Horizons Scuba Diving in Lexington came to the Hazard Pavilion Tuesday to teach kids how to scuba dive.

It is all part of the Gear Up program that gets kids and their parents ready for post secondary education as early as 2nd grade.

“It’s all about preparing these kids for post secondary education, making them college ready when they enter and then success is the topic once they get to college,” Berea College Gear Up Service Coordinator Steve Jones said.

Things 8th grader Lindsey Eddington says she wouldn’t get to experience otherwise.

“Like how to get better scholarships and go through college better without being confused and not knowing what to do,” Eddington said.

While also applying the lessons hands on.

“He shows us how to do it, then we do it again and then we just keep doing it until we know it better,” Eddington added.

And that is something to dive into.

The Berea College Gear Up program is year-round and is a partnership between Berea College, the Perry County School System and the Challenger Center.

The program serves more than 10,000 students in 19 school districts spanning across 17 counties in Kentucky.
