Gas prices changing driving habits

After weeks of increasing gas prices, most Americans said they are now feeling the effects of the pain at the pump.

As the price of gas nears $4 a gallon, Victoria Skrip is looking for ways to save.

"My habits changed when it hit $3.95. That's it. I'm done. It's $3.95 a gallon in Lexington right now, and it's ridiculous," said Skrip.

Skrip said she made some cutbacks.

"I actually travel to Nashville every weekend, and I've stopped that traveling. I now stick around the Lexington area," said Skrip.

"40,000 miles, I cover a lot of counties," said Wayne Rice.

Rice is an electrical inspector.

"New stuff, old stuff, whatever, I inspect it," said Rice.

Rice bought a smaller car, so he wouldn't have to pay so much to fill up. But now, even that does not help.

"I usually wait until I get about three inspections in a county before I go, because if I didn't I would not make anything," said Rice.

AAA reports an increase in the number of calls they have received to help folks on the side of the road, just because those folks ran out of gas.

A recent Washington Post/ABC News poll reveals most Americans will not drastically change their driving habits until gas reaches about $5 per gallon.

For folks like Wayne Rice, that is more bad news.

"They have cut into my profit quite a bit. I didn't make as much last year for the price of gas. And then this year, it is really going to cut me down," said Rice.

Only time will tell how high prices can go before Americans will quit filling up altogether.

Higher gas prices are also affecting President Obama's approval rating, especially among independents.

If the prices stay high, political pundits believe it could affect President Obama's reelection campaign.
