FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A spokeswoman for Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has confirmed he took a secret trip last week to Germany.

Kerri Richardson told media outlets that Beshear and Economic Development Secretary Larry Hayes made the trip last week to "meet with businesses" and discuss potential investment opportunities. She declined to name the businesses.

Usually when the governor travels out of the country, the trip is announced in advance. Richardson said this one was not announced because the meetings were "preliminary and private."

Beshear also traveled to Germany and France in July.
