ROYALTON, Ky. (WYMT) - Governor Steve Beshear was in Magoffin County Tuesday to participate in groundbreaking for the Dawkins Trail Line.
It is a 36 mile stretch of former railroad line that will be turned into a trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding as part of the Rails to Trails program.
The first piece of the trail will be an 18 mile stretch from Johnson County to Magoffin County.
Once the whole project is completed it will be the longest rails to trails project in Kentucky.
"There's no more beautiful place than Kentucky, and Eastern Kentucky's got a special part of that with these mountains and so it's going to be a big tourism attraction. People are going to come here. They're going to spend money, and we're going to create some jobs and lift the quality of life of our people," said Gov. Beshear.
The first phase of the trail should be finished by next spring.
