Governor Beshear’s Statement on Recent Flash Flooding and Trapped Middlesboro Miners

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 20, 2011)— “I am continuing to closely monitor the recent flash flooding in several southeastern and south-central Kentucky counties.

We have activated our Emergency Management Operations Center to help state and local teams assist in aiding these counties and are determined to get these folks all the assistance they need.

Sadly, local officials report one fatality from the flooding, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this victim.

I am also continuing to closely monitor the efforts to free the trapped miners in Middlesboro and have been in constant contact with officials on the ground.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing has been on the scene since this morning working with federal officials and the company to free the miners, and according to the encouraging reports we have received, the uninjured miners are able to communicate with those above ground and are expected to be rescued some time this evening.”
