Governor sees potential bourbon market in Taiwan

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear is back from a trade mission to Taiwan where he worked to establish new markets for Kentucky-made bourbon whiskey.

Beshear said he sees "enormous potential" to expand the bourbon market in Taiwan where Scotch whiskey now dominates. Bourbon is important economically to Kentucky, which produces 95 percent of the world's supply and ships nearly 29 million gallons to 126 countries.

Taiwan receives only a small amount of that. Beshear says he's going to work to change that.

The weeklong trip included stops in Japan where Beshear said he finalized a deal to open a new manufacturing plant in central Kentucky. He declined to offer specifics out of courtesy to the company that will make the announcement soon.
