The flood waters have gone down in Middlesboro. Now local, state, and federal officials say they will begin surveying the damage.
Governor Steve Beshear was in Middlesboro for a few hours Tuesday morning. He announced he would be signing a disaster declaration for six Southeastern Kentucky counties impacted by flooding.
Beshear traveled through the city by car and saw the mud left behind in neighborhoods.
"We've had a lot of property damage," said Gov. Steve Beshear.
The governor said the state plans to work with several agencies to get things back to normal.
"We will be conducting all of this to get people in their homes as fast as we can and get them all cleaned up, get them back in their businesses," said Beshear.
"It breaks my heart. We toured some of the areas this morning. A lot of people have been affected," said Rep. Rick Nelson.
Officials believe the property damage could take months to clean up.
The governor said FEMA officials will survey the damage to see if it meets the threshold required for federal disaster relief funds.
