HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - More than $5 million in grant money has been given to the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program for their "H.O.M.E." initiative.
"Hiring Our Miners Everyday" provides re-employment services to laid off coal miners and their spouses.
The program retrains them in other industries and helps place them in a job.
"EKCEP is extremely excited to finally get the announcement of the grant from the Department of Labor. We feel this is a real game changer for us in allowing us to grow our "H.O.M.E." initiative to it's fullest extent," said Michael Cornett with EKCEP.
The money is given by the U.S. Department of Labor and is a National Emergency Grant.
So far, "H.O.M.E" has enrolled around 500 miners.
