FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Secretary of State Alison Grimes will speak at Kentucky's premier political event this weekend, making her the only Democrat elected to statewide office to do so.
Gov. Steve Beshear is out of the country on an economic development mission that will cause him to miss the always raucous political picnic in the tiny western Kentucky town of Fancy Farm. Other Democratic leaders have cited an assortment of reasons, including birthday and anniversary parties, for their absences.
Grimes changed her schedule so that she could attend.
The Fancy Farm picnic has been an annual rite that has served as the unofficial kickoff of general election season for generations of Kentucky politicians. It also is a fundraiser that generates better than $200,000 for St. Jerome Catholic Church.
