It could be a long weekend for the small but devoted group of people who say they will stay until the Governor changes his stance on coal mining and follows their views on mountaintop removal.
The folks arrived about 10 Friday morning and demanded to speak to the Governor. Many of the peple were upset with the Governor’s statements in support of the coal industry. They say the Governor needs to speak out against strip mining and to stop his suit against the EPA. After at first saying he would not have time for the group...he did meet with them in the lobby of his office.
After a 15 to 20 minute exchange and back and forth…the group said they were not satisfied and said they were willing to stay until forced to leave or be arrested.
“This administration is adjoining with the coal association in any way it possibly can to not uphold the law, and to enforce the clean water act,” said Teri Blanton.
“Folks have a right to say whatever they think…ought to be done in a civil way,” said Gov. Beshear.
A spokesperson for the Governor says they would not be arrested, they are not doing anything wrong. The building will be secure and they are welcome to stay. The group was expected to stay until a rally Monday by the Kentuckians for the Commonwealth group.
