Instead of electronics, cash or clothes, one of the most popular gifts this Christmas in Kentucky was guns!
Holiday sales figures show in the six days before Christmas, gun dealers across the country submitted nearly half-a-million names for background checks.
Antique & Modern Firearms co-owner Rees Day says it's the continuation of a proud Christmas tradition.
"My father and mother gave me a 20-gauge, single-barrel shotgun in 1958. I was eight years old. That was my first good Christmas gift."
But gun dealers across the country report many customers have very specific reasons for their holiday purchases.
"The economy is certainly a motivator for criminal activity, a
bad economy. And I think people are protecting themselves because of that too," said Day.
One measure of gun sales is background checks. Of the FBI's 14.6 million checks done in the first 11 months of 2011, more than two million were done in Kentucky. That's double the number two gun-check state, Texas.
