Hal Rogers urges Congress to reform entitlement spending

Posted: Thu 11:31 AM, Aug 16, 2012

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Kentucky congressman Hal Rogers said members of congress need to have an "adult discussion" regarding how to trim funding for entitlement programs.

The 5th district Republican made his comments during a recent episode of "Issues and Answers" on WYMT.

Some entitlement programs like Medicare are being spared from automatic cuts that will be triggered in January because the congressional Super Committee failed to act on the debt ceiling.

Rogers said those cuts are a good start, but there are some drawbacks, such as slicing the defense budget.

"We would have an army no larger than that in World War II," Rogers said. "The Air Force would have fewer dollars than when they started in 1947. The Navy would be back to World War I levels. So it's a draconian cut that we simply cannot afford."
