Harlan officers arrest man accused of attacking woman

HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Harlan Police arrested one man they say attacked and robbed a woman last week.

Police found and arrested 27-year-old James Johnson on Sunday night in Harlan.

Officers say he attacked 22-year-old Mareda Balthis who was walking on Cumberland Avenue last Thursday. Police say he beat her and stole her purse.

Johnson is charged with robbery, drug possession, and intimidating a witness.

Police say a man beat a woman and robbed her Thursday morning in Harlan.

Investigators say 22-year-old Mareda Balthis was walking on Cumberland Avenue around 8:00 a.m. when a man approached her. Police say he attacked her and stole her purse.

Police say they do have a suspect and are looking for him.

"It sounds like she was targeted. They knew who she was and maybe some kind of history there," said Harlan Police Chief Mike Thomas.

Police say Balthis suffered injuries and is in the Harlan ARH.
