HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - From the tiniest towns to the biggest cities, keeping criminals at bay and the community safe is no simple task. It takes dedicated police working hand in hand with citizens who care.

Summertime in the mountains - each season brings its own set of challenges for law enforcement, and officers with the Hazard Police Department are working to get the word out about how to protect your property.

"Folks going on vacation, leaving their homes unattended, knowing how to protect themselves that way, to ward off any kind of theft or any other problems," Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen said.

That was just one of a number of topics addressed at this month's public safety meeting at Hazard City Hall.

The police department started having these meetings about a year ago, to hear from citizens and get a better sense of what was happening in the community.

"I have been the victim of a break-in in the past year, so you know that's certainly a concern," said Ralph Asher, who lives in Hazard. "The drug issue, which is a problem."

Chief Allen says the small but dedicated group represents a good cross section of the Hazard community. He says the feedback they get from regular folks helps his department be more responsive to the public.

"Because really the public is our boss and you know we try to listen to them on what they feel like is important in their neighborhood and how we should respond to it," Allen said.

By getting the public involved, Allen says his officers can have more eyes out on the street, ultimately keeping the everyone safer.

Chief Allen says the next meeting will likely take place next month once the school year has begun. Anyone is welcome to attend.
