HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - We probably do not have to remind you the economy is hurting folks here in Eastern Kentucky.

And if the Corner Haven Homeless Shelter in Hazard does not get help soon, it could be the next victim.

But shelter administrator Adrienne Bush said they are doing all they can to keep their doors open.

Donald King is an example of what is possible with help from this shelter.

"As far as how it feels, it is hard to explain really. It is overwhelming. They have done so much for me," said King.

King stayed at Corner Haven for several months last year.

Now, he has his own apartment, is in school and has been sober for ten months.

"My kids, and all that, trying to get their respect back. You know, I admit it. I lost a lot of respect for that but getting back, if not from everyone else, at least for myself," said King.

Bush said she hopes for more success stories like King's.

But with fewer donations coming in and a waiting list to stay at the shelter, she worries they soon could be just an emergency shelter.

"Which means we can provide an overnight stay and a hot dinner and breakfast in the morning. Then we have to turn people out onto the street," said Bush.

Something that she said she believes the community will not stand for.

"It is painful to watch people cross the street with their luggage and go to the picnic shelter. So we can do better," said Bush.

Pryce Hollan is staying at the shelter and said he truly appreciates the generosity of others.

"I just got through, half hour ago, eating a nice meal that was donated and we really appreciate people doing that," said Hollan.

Corner Haven is holding an event on October 1st with local radio stations to help raise money.

If you would like to donate to the shelter, you can call 606-436-5043.
