It's an announcement that has many devoted customers concerned. The United States Postal Service announced they will be doing a study at the mail processing center in Hazard to see if it is feasible to consolidate with the Knoxville, Tennessee mail processing center.

"It'll be hard on a lot of us." says Dan Maggard, a postal customer.

Three other processing centers in eastern Kentucky are also being "studied", these facilities are Campton, London, and Somerset.

"I think it definitely effects all of eastern Kentucky so hopefully that doesn't become an issue." says Jeremy Johnson.

The study, which is expected to be complete in early 2012, comes as the postal service faces its most difficult financial challenge in history. Officials with the postal service say financial woes are to blame for postal service shutdown and consolidation, something customers have a hard time understanding.

"I can't understand that because everybody's funding is delayed or shortened, everybody's including mine." Maggard says.

Others feel technology is to blame due to the fact that people no longer need the postal service to send messages or pay the bills.

"The paperless route not that you see with all the technology, there's a lot of problems with the postal service, not just here but everywhere." adds Johnson.

Since the postal service relies on sales of postage and products to fund its operations, consolidation seems to be the only option.

If the study reveals the possibility to consolidate the postal service would hold a public meeting to explain the proposed operational changes and potential impacts before a final decision was made. Regardless of the outcome the actual post office would still be open for business as of now.
